κόγξ ὄμπαξ

Pronunciation: k̥ʌŋks ˈʌmpɒks   (kohnx OHM-pahks)

Origin: Greek

Anglicised Spelling:     Konx Ompax
Variants:
Konx Om Pax   [kʌŋks ʌm pɒks]    (Golden Dawn)

Definition: κόγξ ὄμπαξ is the phrase which was said at the conclusion of the Eleusinian Mysteries to Demeter. Whilst in the Golden Dawn tradition it is frequently held to translate as 'Light in Extension', in actuality its meaning is likely akin to Hebrew 'amen' or English 'so mote it be'.

Notes:

Due to the wealth of competing theories claiming to account for the origin of this phrase, as well as the difficulty inherent in tracing the actual etymology, I am presently writing an essay on the subject which will hopefully serve to clarify matters. Check back later for more information.
